J.F. | a patient with hearing loss and hypersensitivity to loud sounds
I arrived in Portland in 1998, already having been diagnosed with a mild hearing loss. It got worse. Movies, theater, restaurants, and high-ceilinged rooms became increasingly difficult.
A family friend, a Ph.D. speech therapist, recommended seeing Dr. Frederick, but I put off the visit. I had the usual worries: vanity, expense, admission of aging, etc. But my real fear was that he couldn’t help much. Then what would I do?
Finally, in 2004, I consulted with Dr. Frederick, had a hearing test, and was quickly reassured by his professional competence and his kind manner. My hearing aids have truly made my life easier and more comfortable. I recommend Dr. Frederick without reservation. He is very smart, patient and reliable. And now I hear the birds sing in the morning and the directional signals click in my car.

L.F. | a patient with lifelong hearing loss
It has been a highlight to have met and become a patient of yours. As you know, I have had hearing loss all my life which, incidentally, is now into its seventh decade. My hearing loss has been relatively stable and in the severe range.
I have had many opportunities to get to know other audiologists. They have provided a range of competencies, some good, some less so. While that may not make me an expert, it does provide me with some background to evaluate my experiences with audiologists. Without reservation I can say that your professional expertise and caring manner are the best I have encountered. I felt very confident that you were providing an accurate hearing evaluation that took into account my lifestyle, hearing aid experience, and hearing expectations. In addition, I was glad to learn about the realities of hearing technology and, of course, cost considerations in a professional and unpressured conversation.
I believe that patients that are new to hearing loss will be comforted by the practical and intelligent way you approach them. I imagine that your friendly manner would work with children as well as adults.
I’m very happy with my new hearing aids. I’m hearing better than at any time during my life. That is monumental!
Thank you for taking me on as a patient. I hope that this will be the beginning of a long relationship.

M.O. | a long-term valued patient
I enthusiastically recommend Eric Frederick because I have been his patient for approximately 10 years and have been totally pleased with his service. He is a master of his field and illustrates the advantage of using a doctor of audiology rather than a technician without that extra training. He’s very fair and open about what he can do for me and what he can’t—he doesn’t push or oversell. He’s a great listener—he understands what I try to tell him about my experience and is excellent in his ability to adjust my aids to improve their performance. He’s also very eager to be helpful and accommodating and pleasant to deal with. I went to him because a friend of mine said he was great and would keep trying until he found optimum solutions for her and her husband—and he has done the same for me.

I was first seen by Dr. Frederick in 2014. I had called around to various audiologists and been told they didn’t take OHP (Oregon Health Plan) or that they ‘couldn’t afford to see poor people.’ I have had lifelong hearing loss and have gone through several attempts to get hearing aids, with each audiologist telling me, ‘you need hearing aids,’ and then having each state program or insurance refuse to cover them.
I looked around online and was struck by Dr. Frederick’s website. It was professional, friendly, easy to navigate, and included You Tube videos talking about hearing loss and personal reviews of hearing aids. This demonstrated to me that Dr. Frederick understood and was keeping up with technology (both with hearing aids and with the Internet!). Since I am a bit of a technophile myself, I appreciate it when my doctor understands that I want to be able to connect my hearing aids via Bluetooth to my cell phone, for example. I emailed the office hoping that they would take OHP and got back a prompt, friendly, professional response from Stefanie, Dr. Frederick’s office manager. She set me up quickly with an appointment to get my hearing tested, kept in contact via both email and phone as needed, and reassured me that they would work with OHP to help me.
I came in and got my hearing tested. The process was efficient, painless, and professionally done. Dr. Frederick was very friendly, competent, and knowledgeable, and I was impressed by the office’s use of laptops and computers, largely paperless as far as I can tell. He confirmed that my hearing loss has gotten worse over the years, that I needed hearing aids, and that he would help me get at least one through OHP, and would look at financing for a second one if I wanted or needed it.
Even with all the changes to OHP due to the Affordable Care Act, Stefanie and Dr. Frederick navigated the process quickly and easily, and before I knew it, I was picking out colors for my Oticon Nera. I was frankly shocked when I had it in my ear before a month was out. After years of being told no one would help me, the fact that this office handled things with alacrity and compassion was almost overwhelming. Dr. Frederick worked with me over the next month or two to fine tune my hearing aid’s settings and to get me used to hearing things I’ve never heard before. When I was completely satisfied and thrilled with the device’s performance, he helped me set up a very reasonable plan to finance my second aid.
As of now, 4/25/2014, I have two modern, beautiful, amazing hearing aids. I can hear birds, other people’s music on their headphones on the MAX, and conversations in busy places. I can watch movies in the theater again. I can hear on the phone! My life is amazingly better with my hearing aids, and I am so grateful to Stefanie and Dr. Frederick for making it happen. Despite the fact that I’m part of the working poor and on OHP, I never felt the kind of disdain I got from the other audiologists I called who said they, ‘couldn’t help poor people.’ Audiology Center Northwest has been amazing for their capability, their compassion, and their commitment to helping me, the person with the broken ears. After years of frustration, it only took three months for these guys to change my life.
I would recommend them without reservation to anyone, and have. I have a big stack of cards and hand them out to anyone I know who’s looking into getting their hearing checked. You couldn’t ask for a better team than Audiology Center Northwest. I’m so grateful, and happy!

N.H. | a patient who had been told there weren’t treatment options to soothe her tinnitus
Dr. Frederick put my husband and I at ease right away. He explained the causes and different treatments available to help a patient with tinnitus very clearly. Within a very short period, I was given a treatment that gave me complete absence of tinnitus. He went over how he would see me starting one or two weeks after using treatment at home and then regular checkups as needed. I wholeheartedly recommend him.

A retired audiologist gave me some very good advice, ‘Seek a well-qualified, established audiologist to treat your hearing loss.’ I am very happy that I clicked on Dr. Frederick’s website. My experience with him from his initial hearing evaluation to selecting and fitting of hearing aids has been completely positive. His level of expertise is outstanding. So is his friendly manner and his attention to my level of comfort and satisfaction. I believe every word when he says he is not in the business of selling hearing aids. He is in the business of helping people hear better. Stefanie, his office manager, is very knowledgeable and is very accommodating with scheduling appointments, etc.

I’m 37 and I’ve worn hearing aids since I was four years old. I’ve gone to probably four or five audiologists and at least that many hearing aids sales reps, and I have to tell you hands down—Dr. Eric Frederick is by far the best audiologist I’ve ever gone too. He knew exactly what he was doing, he explained everything to me in plain English, and is a super nice, very sociable guy. Very professional, polite, and just a good man which is hard to find these days. I’d give him a 10. I’m going to recommend him to all my friends and family. I’ve got several friends who have hearing loss and some that have children with hearing loss. I’m going to recommend him because, like I said, he’s the best I’ve ever had.
